Tuesday Warren Buffett disclosed to investors that he has stage one prostate cancer. It is an early form of the disease and doctors have assured him that he will make a full recovery after treatment.
He told investor that he has been assured that cancer has not spread to other parts of his body, and after a few weeks of radiation that will begin this summer that he will be back to normal. The only real effect of the radiation is that he will not be able to travel for a few weeks.
Mr. Buffett has been in great health for all of his adult life, the closest prior call he had was in 2000 when he was hospitalized for removal of non cancerous polyps from his colon.
But any adverse condition in the man that has run one of the world’s most successful conglomerates for almost a half of a century bears watching.
Mr. Buffet has said in the recent past that he has found an individual to succeed him and that he has a couple of backups in mind. At this point he has not named names.
The market did not like the news and stock in Berkshire declined a little more that 1.5% after the news hit the market. The stock is trading at its lowest value in years trading at 1.1 times its book value. It has consistently has traded at more than 60% higher.
Is there any way we can benefit from the news at Berkshire Hathaway? Probably not since the stock is trading at more than $119,000 a share which is a little expensive for the average Joe, but we can always benefit from the reaction it might cause in the general market.
